Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be referred?

Yes. We will need a referral from your GP. If you have previously seen another psychiatrist or psychologist a referral from them would also be helpful.

Is my treatment likely to be covered under health insurance?

It is very possible, but it will depend on your health insurance plan. Usually insurers cover costs up to a certain threshold but this varies between plans, so it is best to check with your health insurer first.

What days are you available?

Please see here.

What if I need to cancel an appointment?

If you need to cancel your appointment, please provide at least 24 hours notice. This allows us to offer available appointments to patients on the waiting list. If you cancel within 24 hours of your appointment or miss it entirely you will be charged 50% of the total appointment fee. For an Initial Assessment this will mean a charge of 50% of a 1 hour appointment.

How many sessions will I need?

Typically treatment will take 4 – 8 sessions over several months, but this is entirely dependent on the severity and complexity of the case. ADHD assessments usually take 2 sessions but may also take longer.

What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist?

A psychiatrist is a fully qualified medical doctor, undertaking a minimum of five years postgraduate training after their six year medical degree in order to become a specialist in psychiatry. A psychiatrist is practiced in understanding the physical and emotional effects on the body in order to diagnose, treat or prevent mental illness. Psychologists have qualifications in psychology, but do not have medical training. For more information about psychiatry please visit the RANZCP website.
