Types of consultation

We offer various consultations depending on the need as identified by you and your General Practitioner. We welcome input from a family member, if appropriate, and are happy to have them present during the interview with patient approval.

As specialists, without a practice nurse, we cannot offer intensive follow-up. Patients need to be proactive about returning for a review when needed. People previously seen take priority over new referrals and will be seen promptly. We do accept email contact between sessions, and try to respond within 72 hours.

Initial Assessment

This consultation’s purpose is to define the current problems. This requires us to have a comprehensive understanding of your present situation and past experiences, including previous psychological and psychiatric difficulties, family problems and physical health. We can then recommend the best therapy options available to you. Your agreement with the treatment formulation is crucial to the success of the program, so we will take into account your own treatment preferences and the views of your general practitioner.

Consultation - third party

This consultation provides advice about a patient to a third party . The third party will have a legitimate interest in the patient’s assessment and treatment. For instance, a parent or other family member, employer or any other person or organisation which the patient agrees should be advised of the treatment being received, for reasons such as paying for that treatment. We discuss the nature of the problem, its severity and the likelihood of the treatment’s success.

Follow-up Psychiatric Review

During these appointments, we monitor whether the treatment is working as well as expected and amend it as necessary. It is likely that you will need more than one follow-up as most psychiatric illness episodes take several weeks to resolve.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) assessments

These typically take two sessions. The first session evaluates general psychiatric conditions, depression, anxiety, alcohol or substance, psychosis etc before assessing possible ADHD in the second session. Management of ADHD conditions is complex, involving use of Class B stimulant medications with their additional Ministry of Health controls. As ADHD has been regarded as having a childhood onset, please bring any school reports you have.

Missed appointments and late cancellations

Please give us as much notice as you can. Appointments cancelled within 24 hours or missed appointments incur a fee of 50% of the appointment cost.

Referrals

You must have a referral from a General Practitioner to book an appointment with us. It is necessary for us to have a full understanding of your medical background in order to assess you and determine treatment. We reserve the right to decline any referrals which we think lie outside our areas of expertise.
